Why Group Classes Work
A dog that listens at home but falls apart at the park has trained for the wrong environment. Group classes are the most efficient way to proof obedience around the exact distractions your dog struggles with, other dogs, unfamiliar people, novel sounds, and the controlled chaos of a busy training space. CJ's Houston group classes use small class sizes (typically 4 to 6 dogs) so every handler gets meaningful coaching and every dog gets the calm, structured exposure they need. Group classes also build community, you train alongside other Houston-area owners working on the same things.
Classes We Offer
We run progressive levels so your dog can keep learning as their skills mature.
- Puppy Kindergarten, 8 to 16 weeks: socialization, name recognition, sit/down/come, polite greetings, bite inhibition, handling exercises, vet prep
- Puppy Foundations, 4 to 8 months: leash manners, leave it/drop it, recall basics, polite play, distraction work
- Adult Foundations, 8 months and up: loose-leash walking, place, stay with duration, real-world distraction proofing
- Advanced Obedience, graduates of foundations: off-leash reliability, public-space proofing, advanced recall, distance work
- Reactive Rover, small group (max 4 dogs) for dogs working through leash reactivity in a controlled setting
What You'll Learn in Class
Group classes build practical skills you'll use every day in Houston: calm walks through your neighborhood, polite behavior on outdoor patios, focused obedience around other dogs at the park, reliable recall when something interesting catches their eye. Every class session is structured, short focused drills with rest breaks, real-world distraction work, and active handler coaching from CJ throughout. Homework between classes reinforces the work and keeps progress moving.
Vaccination and Pre-Class Requirements
For everyone's safety, all dogs in group classes must be current on rabies, DHLPP/DA2P, and bordetella vaccinations. Puppies starting kindergarten can begin one week after their second vaccination round. Bring proof at the first class. Reactive Rover and any class involving close work with other dogs requires a private behavior assessment beforehand to confirm the class is the right fit.

Our Training Philosophy
Most behavior issues, leash reactivity, resource guarding, separation anxiety, recall failures, come down to a communication breakdown between the dog and the human. Our job is to fix that. We use a balanced, relationship-based methodology grounded in clear communication, structured routines, and real-world practice. Three pillars guide every program:
Communication
Dogs read energy, body language, and consistent patterns. We coach handlers to send signals their dog actually understands, instead of repeating verbal cues that mean nothing.
Structure
Predictable routines, clear expectations, and consistent boundaries make dogs calmer and more confident. Structure isn't rigidity, it's the framework that lets your dog relax.
Real-World Practice
Training happens in real Houston neighborhoods, real parks, real homes, where the behavior actually has to work. Sterile training rooms produce dogs that fall apart on a real walk.
Frequently Asked Questions
What age can my dog start group classes?
Puppies can join Puppy Kindergarten one week after their second round of vaccinations, usually around 10 to 12 weeks. Adult dogs can start at any age in our Adult Foundations class. It's never too late to train a dog.
How long are the classes?
Most levels run 6 weeks of one-hour classes weekly. Reactive Rover runs 6 weeks. We also offer drop-in advanced classes for graduates.
What's the class size?
We cap most classes at 4 to 6 dogs so every handler gets meaningful coaching. Reactive Rover is capped at 4 dogs to keep the environment manageable for dogs working on leash reactivity.
What if my dog is reactive or aggressive?
Reactive dogs go through a private behavior assessment first, and most start in private sessions or our Reactive Rover small-group format rather than standard classes. Dogs with serious aggression history typically need in-home behavior modification before group work.
What training method does CJ use in classes?
Balanced, relationship-based training. Positive reinforcement for new skills, clear corrections for unsafe or unwanted behavior, and structured routines that build calm focus.
What do I need to bring?
Proof of vaccinations at the first class, a flat collar or harness (no retractable leashes), a 4 to 6 foot leash, your dog's normal kibble or high-value treats, and water. We send a full first-class checklist after enrollment.
Can I observe a class before signing up?
Yes, contact us to schedule an observation. We'd rather you see the format and meet CJ in person before you commit.
