Who Board and Train Is For

Who Board and Train Is For

Board and train works best when your schedule won't allow consistent daily training, when the home environment is reinforcing the wrong behaviors, or when the issues are severe enough that an immersive reset is the fastest path forward. Houston-area owners come to us for board and train when they've tried weekly classes and the results didn't stick, when they've adopted a rescue with serious history, when a puppy is overwhelming the household, or when behavior has crossed the line into something they can't safely manage alone. We work with all breeds and sizes.

What Your Dog Learns During Board and Train

What Your Dog Learns During Board and Train

Our 2-week, 3-week, and 4-week programs progressively layer skills with real-world distractions. By the end your dog comes home with reliable, daily-life-ready obedience and a calmer baseline.

  • Loose-leash walking and heel, no more pulling through the neighborhood
  • Place command, solid duration on a bed, mat, or cot through distractions
  • Off-leash recall, comes when called, even with prey drive triggers
  • Sit, down, stay with duration and distance
  • Threshold manners at doors and gates (no door-darting)
  • Calm, polite greetings, no jumping on guests
  • Crate training and confident alone time
  • Behavior modification for reactivity, aggression, and anxiety as needed
  • Public-space exposure, restaurants, parks, sidewalks, stores
Program Length: Which Is Right for Your Dog

Program Length: Which Is Right for Your Dog

We don't sell one-size programs. The 2-week board and train is for dogs who need foundation obedience and minor manners work, typical puppies and well-adjusted adult dogs without serious behavior history. The 3-week program adds significant off-leash reliability and proofing through major distractions. The 4-week program is built for behavior modification, reactive, aggressive, fearful, or anxious dogs who need consistent daily counter-conditioning to make real progress. CJ recommends the right program length at the consultation based on the assessment.

Handler Transfer: Why Most Board and Trains Fail

Handler Transfer: Why Most Board and Trains Fail

Most Houston board and train programs send a trained dog home to an untrained handler, and the gains evaporate inside 30 days. We don't operate that way. Every CJ's board and train ends with handler transfer sessions where you learn the cues, the timing, and the body language we used. We coach you on the same drills and walk through the routines you'll need at home. After your dog comes home, we follow up to make sure the work is sticking, and our lifetime support means you can reach out months later when life throws something new at you.

Our Training Philosophy

Most behavior issues, leash reactivity, resource guarding, separation anxiety, recall failures, come down to a communication breakdown between the dog and the human. Our job is to fix that. We use a balanced, relationship-based methodology grounded in clear communication, structured routines, and real-world practice. Three pillars guide every program:

Communication

Dogs read energy, body language, and consistent patterns. We coach handlers to send signals their dog actually understands, instead of repeating verbal cues that mean nothing.

Structure

Predictable routines, clear expectations, and consistent boundaries make dogs calmer and more confident. Structure isn't rigidity, it's the framework that lets your dog relax.

Real-World Practice

Training happens in real Houston neighborhoods, real parks, real homes, where the behavior actually has to work. Sterile training rooms produce dogs that fall apart on a real walk.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the board and train program?

We offer 2-week, 3-week, and 4-week programs. The right length depends on your dog's age, baseline behavior, training goals, and any behavior modification work needed. CJ recommends a length at the free consultation.

Will my dog stay obedient after they come home?

That depends on you, and we set you up to win. Every program includes handler transfer sessions where you learn the exact cues and routines we used, plus written homework and lifetime support after pickup. The dogs that regress are the ones whose owners skip the transfer work.

Is board and train safe for puppies?

Yes, puppies do extremely well in board and train because the consistent daily structure builds habits faster than weekly classes can. We focus on potty training, crate training, foundation obedience, and socialization in a safe, supervised environment.

Can a board and train fix aggression or reactivity?

Often, yes. The 4-week program is specifically built for behavior modification, reactive, aggressive, fearful, or anxious dogs. We do a careful assessment first to make sure the program is the right fit. Some dogs are better served by in-home behavior work; we'll tell you honestly which is right.

What training methods do you use during board and train?

Balanced training: positive reinforcement to build new skills, clear corrections to interrupt unsafe behavior, and a structured daily routine that builds calm focus. No shock collars, no alpha rolls, no fear-based methods.

Do you work with rescue dogs and dogs with bite histories?

Yes, many of our board-and-train dogs are rescues or dogs with bite histories that other trainers wouldn't accept. We assess each case carefully and build a safety-first plan. Be straight with us at the consultation about everything in the dog's history.

Can I visit my dog during the program?

We don't recommend visits during the first half of the program, the dog settles in, builds trust with us, and progresses much faster without the disruption. We share progress photos and updates throughout the stay. Handler transfer sessions happen before pickup.

How much does board and train cost?

Pricing depends on program length and the level of behavior modification needed. We give a flat program quote at the free consultation, no surprise charges, no add-ons. Contact us to schedule.
